The Little Writer that Could

I’ve been browsing through the internet lately. What I’ve been searching for is a scope of reality in the writing world. As an aspiring writer, I accept that my writing may not be the best. That it will take time, practice, and I will never cease to learn as a writer what it means to be one. Perfection without anything to grasp within reach, but can always be seen, and can always be felt nearby. The publishing companies Harper Collins and Random House are the two commercial publishers that have caught my eye.

Harper Collins brings to the table Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman; Two worldwide authors that are so very little known, and yet so widely read. Terry Pratchett holds close to the heart with a chuckle and a philosophy, much like an old pocket watch. While Neil Gaiman caters to a growing gothic style of storytelling, which has inspired many, and gave a swift kick in the bottoms of many growing teenagers to have a standard and interest, rather than to following the tide.

Random House is a publisher of many books that call my shelf home. Mostly ancient wonders of Clive Barker, or the various books under the Del Rey label that are from my classical cheesy fantasy choices, such as the Shannara series. I always looked toward them as a possibility because they seem so open to new authors, and hold a big consideration toward the advertisement, selling, and general publication of an author’s book. I can always go to a bookstore and see the legions of the house upon their shelves.

I browse their websites; notice they do not accept unsolicited (Non-agent/Unknown) manuscripts from equally unsolicited writers. What this entails is my requirement to hire an agent. I am a terribly anti-social person when it comes to things like this, so I do look forward to de-sensitizing myself through acquiring an agent. Don’t get me wrong, if there was another way for me to submit a manuscript with notice I would! But I think having an agent would be good in the long run nonetheless, and worth every penny.

As I sorted through the thousands of books, a grin settled upon my normally neutral exterior. Some of these books are TERRIBLE! That or they carry such unoriginal, over used, and mind numbingly bad concepts that you can’t help but give a chuckle to the sinking ship of mankind! But, I mean not to be a terrible person. Who am I to judge if my writing is better or worse? Perhaps I am reading too many covers, and not enough pages? There is no reason for such emotions toward this, and that’s what makes an opinion an opinion. The unbiased words of self, and only self. So take it with a pinch of salt, or rather a pinch of sugar if you’re into that.

I feel now that I have a chance with my current novel concept “Soul Games”. What is Soul Games? Good question, but one I will only answer when the confidence is behind my fingertips. When the idea is not half-baked. That is when I will let you all know, that is unless I know you in person. Then I tend to open the floodgates of thought and just unload the concept like a man armed with a hair trigger and with a case of turrets syndrome of the hand. I will, in the coming two weeks or so if that’s what it takes to feel comfortable about it, be producing a new website from which I will blog. The dreaded word, yes, but one I feel will help get my name out as a writer. It is there that I will keep those interested updated with my writings, the occasional insight of life, and my own perspectives on the things known widely as ‘the goings ons’.

Thanks for reading, and I hope for some comments! Nothing encourages a writer’s pen like a pat on the back…unless he’s writing at the time. Then avoid pats. They tend to turn a letter into a rudely long line across the page.
